PME SYSTEMS

ABSTRACT

Power systems grounding is probably the most misunderstood element of any Power systems design. This project studies the characteristics of different Power Systems Grounding techniques as currently applied  and misapplied within industry today. In practice today for utility distribution network Protective Multiple Earthing (PME) which is a variant of the neutral earthing is the most widely adopted earthing system arrangement. In this project a comparative study of PME and Isolated systems is carried out investigating  their fault behavior, safety and requirements. An experiment to demonstrate that there is continuous power dissipation to ground even under normal system operating conditions in the PME system is also performed  and based on the findings of the study, a recommendation for the Isolated system where and when possible is made.
